May We Forever Stand: A History of the Black National Anthem (The John Hope Franklin Series in African American History and Culture) by Imani Perry

The twin acts of singing and fighting for freedom have been inseparable in African American history. May We Forever Stand tells an essential part of that story. With lyrics penned by James Weldon Johnson and music composed by his brother Rosamond, „Lift Every Voice and Sing“ was embraced almost immediately as an anthem that captured the story and the aspirations of black Americans.
Since the song’s creation, it has been adopted by the NAACP and performed by countless artists in times of both crisis and celebration, cementing its place in African American life up through the present day.
In this rich, poignant, and readable work, Imani Perry tells the story of the Black National Anthem as it traveled from South to North, from civil rights to black power, and from countless family reunions to Carnegie Hall and the Oval Office. Drawing on a wide array of sources, Perry uses „Lift Every Voice and Sing“ as a window on the powerful ways African Americans have used music and culture to organize, mourn, challenge, and celebrate for more than a century.

Finland in the Second World War: Between Germany and Russia

2002 | 210 Pages | ISBN: 1349421162 | PDF | 1.3 MB

This book describes the struggle for power between two totalitarian dictatorships in the north of Europe and the battle for survival of a small nation caught between them. In the Winter War of 1939-1940 Finland successfully fought off a Soviet invasion. Then, with none to turn to but Germany, it became the only democratic state on the Axis side. Ultimately, it succeeded in extricating itself from the war and, despite the shadow of Russia looming over it, averted a Communist takeover.

The Magic of Coin-Trees from Religion to Recreation: The Roots of a Ritual By Ceri Houlbrook

English | PDF,EPUB | 2018 | 311 Pages | ISBN : 3319755161 | 12.92 MB

This book traces the history of ritual landscapes in the British Isles, and the transition from religious practice to recreation, by focusing on a highly understudied exemplar: the coin-tree. These are trees imbued with magical properties into which coins have been ritually embedded. This is a contemporary custom which can be traced back in the literature to the 1700s, when it was practiced for folk-medical and dedicatory purposes. Today, the custom is widespread, with over 200 coin-trees distributed across the British Isles, but is more akin to the casual deposition of coins in a wishing-well: coins are deposited in the tree in exchange for wishes, good luck, or future fortune. Ceri Houlbrook contributes to the debate on the historic relationships between religion, ritual, and popular magic in British contexts from 1700 to the present.

Enlightenment Town: Finding Spiritual Awakening in a Most Improbable Place by Jeffery Paine

English | May 20th, 2018 | ISBN: 1608685748 | 250 Pages | PDF | 18.53 MB

Why has a tiny old mining town straight out of Gunsmoke or Deadwood — Crestone, Colorado — become home to twenty-five spiritual centers representing nearly all the brand-name faiths of the world? With the keen eye of a storyteller, the insights of a scholar, and the heart of a seeker, Jeffery Paine narrates a truly unique adventure.
He explores Crestone’s wintry, oxygen-thin mountain geography and introduces a cast of spiritual mavericks and unlikely visionaries. Paine finds in Crestone a remarkable dedication to coexistence. Paradoxically, the town’s amazing spiritual diversity highlights fundamental commonalities in a way that will strike and even inspire believers, agnostics, and searchers of every stripe.

Joshua D. Zimmerman, „The Polish Underground and the Jews, 1939-1945“

2015 | ISBN-10: 1107014263 | 469 pages | PDF true | 4 MB

The Polish Underground and the Jews, 1939–1945 examines one of the central problems in the history of Polish-Jewish relations: the attitude and the behavior of the Polish Underground – the resistance organization loyal to the Polish government-in-exile – toward the Jews during World War II. Using a variety of archival documents, testimonies, and memoirs, Zimmerman offers a careful, dispassionate narrative, arguing that the reaction of the Polish Underground to the catastrophe that befell European Jewry was immensely varied, ranging from aggressive aid to acts of murder. By analyzing the military, civilian, and political wings of the Polish Underground and offering portraits of the organization’s main leaders, this book is the first full-length scholarly monograph in any language to provide a thorough examination of the Polish Underground’s attitude and behavior towards the Jews during the entire period of World War II.
