The most striking feature of British colonialism in the twentieth century was the confidence it expressed in the use of science and expertise, especially when joined with the new bureaucratic capacities of the state, to develop natural and human resources of the empire.
Triumph of the Expert is a history of British colonial doctrine and its contribution to the emergence of rural development and environmental policies in the late colonial and postcolonial period. Joseph Morgan Hodge examines the way that development as a framework of ideas and institutional practices emerged out of the strategic engagement between science and the state at the climax of the British Empire. Hodge looks intently at the structural constraints, bureaucratic fissures, and contradictory imperatives that beset and ultimately overwhelmed the late colonial development mission in sub-Saharan Africa, south and southeast Asia, and the Caribbean.
Triumph of the Expert seeks to understand the quandaries that led up to the important transformation in British imperial thought and practice and the intellectual and administrative legacies it left behind.

‚Sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must master it.‘ The Lord’s words to Cain, Book of Genesis
Human sacrifice, floods, plagues, murders, massacres, betrayal, wars, incest, sea monsters and dragons—how well do we really remember the stories we learnt in school scripture lessons? From Genesis to the Book of Revelation, Dark History of The Bible explores some of the oldest stories in the world. Whether we are believers or not, these are some of the most influential stories in life and in art. As well as looking at the historical roots behind the stories, the book examines their inconsistencies and how they can be interpreted in different ways. From Jacob tricking his father Isaac over his brother’s inheritance to the walls of Jericho tumbling down, from Moses crossing the Red Sea to Jesus’s Flight into Egypt, from King David and Bathsheba to John the Baptist and Salome, from the sea monster Leviathan to the Beast and the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse, Dark History of the Bible includes the most compelling stories from the King James’s Authorised Version of the Old and New Testaments. Easily accessible and illustrated with 180 colour and black-and-white photographs, maps and artworks, Dark History of the Bible examines the tales of skulduggery, vengeance and retribution in the world’s most famous book.

Breakout at Stalingrad by Heinrich Gerlach

2018 | ISBN: 1786690624, ASIN: B07282HSWR | EPUB, AZW3 | 661 pages | 1,2/1,4 Mb
Historical, Military

The original version of the classic novel of the epic World War II battle, confiscated by the Russian secret services in 1949, and now rediscovered in the Russian archives.
This is one of the best novels about the Stalingrad epic battle, all the more because it was written by someone who was actually there and lived through that brutal struggle on the banks of the Volga. It’s a remarkable account by a German Panzer Lieutenant of the terrible battle of Stalingrad where death, slaughter and ice pervaded the battlefield. Gerlach tells his story through the eyes of his unit trapped in the cauldron in the winter of 1942-3 and the title refers to a suicidal plan to try and burst through the Soviet forces and reach the German lines, many kilometers to the west.
Although the book requires some knowledge on the part of the reader regarding the general situation on the Eastern Front in 1942, and it doesn’t avoid some cliches, it is superbly written and, in my opinion, far better than the book “The Forsaken Army” that Gerlach reconstructed under hypnosis after the war due to his original manuscript been confiscated in Russia.
It is quite revealing about how the Germans underestimated the Soviet strength in the months and weeks prior to the great Red Army offensive of November 19, 1942 and the action moves easily from the snow covered steppes between Stalingrad and the Don river, to Hitler’s HQ and the 6th Army HQ in order to complete the puzzle of the great tragedy. The mentality of the German army of the era is very well presented, as are the catastrophic consequences of Hitler’s and Goering’s decision to keep the trapped 6th Army in the ruins of Stalingrad instead of ordering it to break out as soon as possible.
